V1.4 & higher of Membership Management System 2008 supports
barcodes on membership cards & the ability to scan
those membership cards & log when they were scanned.
Requirements for printing membership cards with
barcodes:
- Any print - Laser recommended but DeskJet will
work
- the ability to laminate the membership cards
Requirements for scanning membership cards
- a USB barcode scanner that supports CODE 39.
Here is an example of a CODE39 barcode:

-
Most barcode readers support many
different standards (CODE32, CODE128 etc). We have
opted to use CODE39 since it is supported on 99.9%
of all barcode readers.
-
To check if your barcode reader is
compatible with MMS 2008 please check your manual.
You can also install MMS 2008 & print a page of
memberships then scan them in when at the main menu.
You can then see which member was scanned from the
main menu:

-
You get a summary of the Membership
number, name, membership type & the date/time.
-
You can also click on Tools & View
Members Log to see all members than have been
scanned.
-
Membership numbers must be 8 or less
characters for scanning to work.
-
You must be at the Main Menu for
scanning in barcodes. V1.41 will support
scanning a membership card from the Add/Edit screen.
Note: Serial barcode readers are not
supported. We may add support for this in the
future. At the moment you must use a USB reader.
Before doing a batch of membership
cards we strongly recommend you print out several &
verify that they scan in properly.
In V1.4 you can now print membership
cards in the evaluation version (though there is an
evaluation text displayed - this doesn't appear in the
full version). This will help you tested whether
barcodes are right for your business.
